Back 2 The Floor

Skills Lead goes ‘Back to the Floor’ for National Apprenticeship Week

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2016, Skills Lead for The Skills Service, Sue Addison, went ‘Back 2 the Floor’ on Monday at Sawtry-based manufacturer, Codem Composites.

The Skills Service is a brokerage service delivered by Opportunity Peterborough and funded by the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to drive economic growth by facilitating effective partnership working between businesses, education and training providers.

The LEP is organising ‘Back 2 the Floor’ for the second year in a row, a campaign to emphasise the importance of apprenticeships to local growth and encourage more businesses locally to offer them. Local business people are challenged to become apprentices for the day to gain first-hand experiences of apprenticeships.

Codem Composites is a high tech manufacturer of carbon fibre components for the motorsport, aerospace, communication and architectural industries. Codem employs 25 members of staff, including four apprentices, with plans to recruit more this summer.

Managing Director, Kevin Doherty, said “Apprenticeships have provided our company with a vital tool for growth and we were keen to get involved with this initiative to encourage more businesses to get on board. We tailored a full day for Sue to ensure that she got a real flavour of the apprenticeships that we offer.”

Sue joined the team making the headlight housing for a Noble sports car. Her hands on experience included using a digital board for the intricate process of cutting carbon sheets before helping the laminating team to layer and mould the shapes to perfection.

At the end of her busy day, Sue felt exhausted but inspired: “I was amazed by the level of skill and huge attention to detail demonstrated by everyone on the team. Each stage of the process requires quality assurances to eliminate waste and ensure that the final product is lightweight and incredibly strong. I would like to thank Codem for making me feel like part of the team and for patiently answering all of my questions!”
