All Year 11 students at Thomas Deacon Academy in Peterborough took part in mock interviews with a wide range of local professionals who had given up their time to support these valuable sessions. The aim of the exercise was to offer the students an introduction to an interview setting and build their confidence in preparation for applications for jobs, apprenticeships or further education.
Students had prepared their CVs in advance and the role play interviews were made to feel as real as possible. After a 10 minute one-to-one interview, feedback was given to each student with guidance for future real-life interviews.
Malcolm Trimm of Caterpillar took part in this activity and commented that: “It felt very real, the students were well prepared, hand shakes rehearsed and CVs printed, nerves were evident in anticipation of the questions that would be asked. The pupils, without exception, appreciated the experience and seemed to appreciate the advice offered. This is an excellent way for professionals to spend a couple of hours, giving the benefit of their experience in the real world to a younger generation.”
Other organisations carrying out the mock interviews included the Peterborough Skills Academy, ALS Pharmaceuticals, Skanska, Northlight Media, Keeping HR Simple, Rhetonic, Barnack UK, Crightons, Moore Stephens, Peterborough Regional College, Peterborough DNA, NHS, Handelsbanken, CBA Developments, Buckles Solicitors, Anglian Water, HMRC, Hunt & Coombs and Change Agents UK.
